Can You Get Disability Compensation Or Treatment For -Facts

When I was in the Marines I was offered vision correction surgery by the Navy since I was in a limited MOS at the time that was approved by military for PRK vision correction by the military doctors. I went ahead with surgery. In consults docs explained how vision will naturally begin to deteriorate around mid 40′s. Here I am 5 years later, only 26 years old and vision is back at where I’ll need glasses again and getting worse. Can I file a disability claim for this? Anyone else experience similar? Can I go to the VA to atleast get free glasses?

did they give you a disability rating on your eyes when you left the military????

Best thing you can hope for is some assistance for glasses highly doubt that you will get anything else, and its not like you have lost your sight, you are just back at the same point you started at, so that hardly warrants a cash hand out does it………….

You can apply for VA disability online at this site. http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp
You can also receive eye care from the VA . You will need to take a copy of your DD214 to your nearest VA hospital and enroll for medical care. They will assign you to a primary care physician who after examination will refer you to the eye clinic. After you apply for disability , contact one of the service organizations to represent your claim. A list of those chartered by Congress can be found at www1.va.gov/vso/index.cfm . They will represent you free of charge. I prefer the Military Order of the Purple Heart , but to each his own. Normally the VA won’t provide eye care unless a person has a rated disability , but there are special circumstances to numerous to type here , one of which your problem falls under. Depending on where you live , states with higher vet populations who have filed for disability will naturally have a bigger backlog of claims , you are looking at 6 to 8 months average for your claim to be completed and you being notified of the outcome. I have been dealing with the VA for 40 years and they can either frustrate the hell out of you , or surprise the hell out of you , so be patient. Good luck and thanks for serving. By the way , if over the years your vision keeps you from substantially gainful employment as they call it, file for Individual Unemployability which rates you 100% total and permanently disabled. It comes with a lot of perks.
