What does laser treatment have to do with breastfeeding? Did the doctor explain why you have to stop breastfeeding? I can see if you might have to pump and throw away the milk for a few days to make sure the anaesthesia/drugs don’t go into the baby, but why do you have to stop for months?

  2. njnic Says:

You can continue to produce milk as long as you are pumping during the time that you can’t breast feed. Unfortunately if it’s a long period of time your baby may not go back to the breast but you could continue to pump and use a bottle to feed. Good Luck

Yes, you will have to relactate. Either by having your baby nurse, using a Supplemental Nursing System, or just by pumping

I am not sure why you would have to give up breastfeeding fro a couple of months after this surgery – go back to your surgeon/ pre-op clinic and clarify things. I would have thought it would be a week or so at most. I think if you stop feeding any longer than that you will have real problems relactating, even if you pump regularly. There is no need to stop breastfeeding because of regular laser lasik surgery. There are some major eye surgeries though where they confine your every movement (like surgery for detached retina) in either case please be certain whether or not you really need to wean. Contact la leche league there are groups in every neighborhood.
