]]> I underwent laser eye surgery on both eyes 6 weeks ago, for correction of astigmatism on the right eye and a slight miopy (-0,50) on the left. I would be very happy with the results but the following thing scares me: in bright daylight, my vision is almost perfect, which is a high improvement compared to the previous “quality” of my vision. However, if I enter a room with a lower light (neons or a room that’s only half lit by natural daylight) my vision gets much worse, which is pretty depressing. I mean, outdoor I can see the details of a far object/person without any trouble, while indoor it gets problematic even with short distances. Is there a possibility that these problems will go away after waiting a little longer (doctors still prescribed eyedrops until september) or should I already start trying to get used to this new situation? Things would be really great without the low light problems, which are more than noticeable. Thank you very much for reading this!

However, I’m concerned with 2 things:

Second, I’m looking for laser eye surgery that’s inexpensive and won’t put me on major debt. I’ve had a friend who had his eyes fixed for $4000. My optometrist doesn’t understand what’s wrong either; he’s already changed it once or twice to make the lens fit better. With my prescription would I be able to have regular laser eye surgery? Is it possible?
I have also heard about intraoptical lenses. I don’t really fancy them, but I have read that they are better for more severe eye problems. If anyone could tell me a little more about that option and any side effects that come with it, I’d be much obliged.

my eczema is atopic dermatitis, which is one of the most common kinds of eczema. what it means is that my skin gets dry very easily. unlike sohhrea, which is on the scalp, atopic dermatitis is usually on legs, arms, and feet. luckily, i hav mild chronical atopic dermatitis, which only required regular use of moisturizer and lotion.

]]> “Gene Therapy For Blindness Improves Vision, Safety Study Indicates
ScienceDaily” (Sep. 9, 2008) — All three people who received gene therapy at the University of Florida to treat a rare, incurable form of blindness have regained some of their vision, according to a paper published online today in Human Gene Therapy.

The patients — one woman and two men ranging from 21 to 24 years old with a type of hereditary blindness called Leber congenital amaurosis type 2 — volunteered to test the safety of an experimental gene-transfer technique in a phase 1 clinical research study conducted by UF and the University of Pennsylvania with support from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
In this form of LCA disease, photoreceptor cells cannot respond to light because a gene called RPE65 does not properly produce a protein necessary for healthy vision. In the study, researchers used an adeno-associated virus — an apparently harmless virus that already exists in most people — to deliver RPE65 to a small area of the retina.
Not only were there no ill effects other than routine postsurgical soreness, the subjects said the vision in their treated eyes was slightly improved in dim lighting conditions.
“The patients report seeing brighter areas and perhaps some images, but basically the message is that this is treatment is fully safe,” said William W. Hauswirth, Ph.D., a professor of ophthalmology and member of UF’s Powell Gene Therapy Center and the UF Genetics Institute.
“One thing we did not do is suppress the patients’ immune systems, which was done in two other LCA clinical trials that were under way,” said Hauswirth, who began studying the adeno-associated virus as a vehicle to deliver genes into living animals more than 30 years ago. “Theoretically, the idea was that it might be necessary to suppress the immune system because we are using a vector that might activate the body’s defenses and cause a harmful response. However, immune suppression itself carries a risk of infections and other problems. Clearly we have shown there is no need to do that in this case.”
Samuel G. Jacobson, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of ophthalmology with the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, is the study’s principal investigator.
“This groundbreaking gene therapy trial builds on 15 years of research sponsored by the National Eye Institute of NIH,” said Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of the NEI. “The study has partially restored vision in three young adults, and it demonstrates that gene therapy can be effective in treating human vision disease. Many human diseases are inherited in families and result from mutations in single genes. These genetic conditions are particularly suited to potential treatment by gene therapy. This trial to treat vision loss from the condition of Leber congenital amaurosis is an important demonstration of proof of principle and shows that we are on the right track. We can now invest in further work to refine, and ultimately to expand, genetic treatment approaches.”
Results published today focus on the health of the entire retina, not just the tiny portion that received the gene therapy. A detailed examination of the therapy’s effectiveness in the treated portion of the eye will appear in an upcoming issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Two other recent LCA clinical trial reports appeared recently in The New England Journal of Medicine.
“The safety study itself is a milestone, but when we see a benefit to the subject — that is a truly a welcome bonus,” said Barry J. Byrne, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of molecular genetics and microbiology and director of UF’s Powell Gene Therapy Center, which manufactured the viral vectors used in the study. “Improvements in someone’s medical condition are ultimately what we are after.”
LCA2 affects about 2,000 people in the United States and is one of several incurable forms of blindness collectively known as retinitis pigmentosa, which in turn affects about 200,000 Americans.
Children with LCA2 experience major visual disability that can lead to total vision loss in adulthood. Although vision loss is severe, the structure of the retina — including its connection to the brain — can remain relatively intact for decades before the photoreceptor cells degenerate.
Study researchers from the University of Pennsylvania also include Artur V. Cideciyan, Ph.D., Tomas S. Aleman, M.D., Sharon B. Schwartz, Ph.D., and Lili Wang, Ph.D.
Shalesh Kaushal, M.D., Ph.D., Thomas J. Conlon, Ph.D., and Sanford L. Boye, M.S., from UF, and former UF Pediatrics Department Chairman Terence Flotte, M.D., now with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, also contributed to the research study.
Byrne, Hauswirth and UF have interest in a company that explores the use of therapies using the adeno-associated virus. UF, Penn and Cornell University hold a patent on gene therapy technology.

]]> I am currently a 4/c midn in NROTC, and was wondering what the Navy’s policy was on laser-eye surgery or LASIK for current midn or newly commissioned officers.
I’m already waiting for a medical waiver so that my national scholarship will be activated. My vision is currently 48-17 (at least that’s what is says on the brim of my glasses) and I have never worn contacts. Is this even correctable?
As for after my commissioning, I am considering being a surface nuke, a naval flight officer, or going green- becoming a Marine. Will the surgery disqualify me from, or negatively effect my chances in any of those fields?

]]> Match 5: The Legacy Continues and Justin vs Phenomenal HBK and Siberian Wolverine

In a star filled tag match, 2 undoubtable legends; HBK and TLC, were involved with 2 up and coming legends; Justin and Wolverine, in a match that caught the eye of many. After screwing TLC out of the World title at No Escape, HBK had been dodging TLC for weeks. Finally after weeks of waiting, TLC finally had his chance to get his hands on HBK. HBK stepped in the ring 1st prepared to start the match off with Justin, but when TLC stepped in instead, HBK backed out and let Wolverine step in. He and TLC locked up and were very even, strength wise. It took a few seconds for somebody to overpower the other, and that somebody was Wolverine. He worked TLC into a bridge position until he had him overpowered enough to put him onto his back and hold his shoulders down for a very early pin. At 2 TLC was able to kick out and impress the fans with a nip up. But though he nipped up, Wolverine still had a grasp on his hands and clotheslined him to the mat. Wolverine then went for a dirtier trick by pressing his knee onto the throat of TLC in a choke. The ref counted to 4 and Wolverine then released the choke. He then backed up to the ropes and ran to hit TLC with a big splash. He stayed on him for another pin but again TLC got a shoulder up. Wolverine brought TLC up after the pin and then whipped him hard into the corner causing him to drop to the mat on impact. Wolverine pulled him right back up and whipped him into his corner this time, where HBK held onto TLC so he wouldn’t fall. Fans reached their feet as HBK thought about tagging in, which he did do because TLC was hurt. He entered the ring and then began to hit a few knife edge chops onto TLC in the corner. After 4 he went to snap suplex TLC, but TLC resisted. Fans cheered and fear struck the face of HBK. He made another attempt but again TLC didn’t budge. HBK then broke off of TLC and dodged out of the ring. TLC’s face looked like he pulled 1 over on HBK, but he was still disappointed not to have gotten his hands on HBK. He made his way to his corner and then tagged in Justin as a few fans cheered. Justin came in calling TLC into the ring, but HBK remained on the outside. So eventually Justin resorted to physical measures and he hit a running baseball slide onto HBK to knock him down. HBK was down on the outside and Justin was standing tall in the ring as GCW went for a commercial break. When GCW returned Justin had not lost control and he was now working on HBK with a sleeper hold as he was on top of his back. HBK was on his knees struggling not to fall. After keeping that hold in for a while, Justin figured it was time to break the hold. He got off HBK and allowed him to reach his feet before knocking him down with a dropkick. HBK got up quickly and was sent down by a 2nd dropkick. He got up once again and this time Justin took HBK down with a back body drop. HBK was in the center of the ring and momentum was in Justin’s favor. So he scaled the top rope. He looked back to see HBK still down and he dove off for a moonsault. Unfortunately HBK was playing possum and he dodged out of the way causing Justin to hit nothing but the mat. HBK rolled for his corner and tagged in Wolverine. Wolverine hustled in and brought Justin up quickly to hit him with a pumphandle slam. He connected perfectly and went for a pin. 1, 2, and a kick out. Wolverine looked frustrated because he thought he had the match in the bag. He managed to keep his cool and rudely kicked Justin across his body as he struggled to his feet. Once he was up, Wolverine hoisted him high in the air for a suplex. He held him high up for 7 seconds before hitting his suplex. He went for a follow up pin. 1, 2, and another kick out. Wolverine punched the mat in frustration, but kept his cool again. He brought Justin up once more and held him high in the again. Right when he was about to connect with his slam, Justin began putting up a fight and he managed to fall forward and fall from his height and hit Wolverine with a gigantic DDT! Fans popped out of their seats in amazement as Wolverine landed directly on his head. Justin mustered up all he could to crawl to his corner. But when he was just a few inches away, Wolverine came to his senses and grabbed a hold of Justin’s foot. He worked his way up pulling Justin away from his partner. Then Justin hit Wolverine with an inziguri. Fans cheered as Justin was in the middle of his partner and Wolverine. He needed to decide whether to make a pin or a tag. He decided to go for the pin. He crawled onto Wolverine and the ref began the count. 1, 2, and a kick out! Fans were disappointed and so was Justin. Nevertheless, he still crawled back to his corner. He was nearly there when Wolverine stopped him again. This time he brought Justin up and held him in the air for a suplex again. After 5 seconds in the air he slammed Justin down with a jackhammer! Wolverine was near Justin and a few seconds
after the move was hit he put his arm over him for the pin. 1, 2, and a kick out! This match was proving to be as good as it looked. Both men began struggling up after the pin, and when Wolverine reached his feet Justin was only on his knees. Wolverine whipped Justin into the corner, and ran to crash himself into Justin against the corner right after. He then rammed his shoulders into Justin’s gut several times before prying him off the corner and on top of the top rope. Wolverine climbed up there as well and fans reached their feet to see what would happen. After Justin put up a fight, Wolverine was able to send himself and Justin off the top rope and to the mat with a superplex! Fans went wild at the impactful maneuver and both men were down and out. After a good 20 seconds each man stirred and crawled to their corners. They crawled at the exact same speed and fans were going wild and reaching their feet again, prepared to see TLC and HBK go at it. Finally it happened! Each tagged in
and they ran right for each other. Punches flew everywhere as fans went nuts watching 2 icons go head to head. After a minute straight of a pure slugfest, TLC landed an uppercut to daze HBK. Fans went wild as the uppercuts kept coming at an alarming rate. Finally HBK swung for a wild right and TLC ducked it and hit an inverted backbreaker! Fans went even crazier. TLC then backed up to the ropes and walked toward HBK and dropped a knee. he got up and continued the process 3 times before climbing to the 2nd rope and dropping a knee. All the time TLC refused to go for the pin. He wanted to bring torture onto HBK. He then got on HBK and began delivering pounding punches to HBK’s skull. The ref could not stop TLC for anything. After the punches he brought HBK up and rammed his head 10 times into the top turnbuckle pad. He then brought HBK over to another corner and rammed his head 10 times into that pad as well. At this point HBK began to shed a little blood. TLC still didn’t let up though.
He brought him over to another pad and rammed his head on that 10 times as well, and did the same thing for the 10th and final corner. Fans were going nuts. After the rams to the head, TLC held HBK’s nearly lifeless body in place to hit him with a dropkick. HBK rolled to the outside after it was hit, and Wolverine was able to make a tag before he reached the outside. Wolverine ran in quickly and around TLC to knock Justin off the apron. He then ran for TLC, but TLC gave him a DDT for his troubles. TLC was on fire and the crowd went wild again when he posed for the crowd. Bodies were everywhere and the only man standing was TLC. He then spotted HBK climbing on the apron, and TLC finally wanted to get the real revenge he craved. He went to get HBK off the apron, but HBK caught him completely by surprise with a Sweet Chin Music! TLC turned around from impact and went right into a Wolf Bomb! Wolverine kept him for the pin. 1, 2, 3! After a 23 minute epic battle between 4 of YWWA’s greatest
HBK still pulled 1 over on TLC. Though TLC got his hands on HBK, he still did not get entirely what he wanted. And that was complete torture of HBK.
