   Medical school (UK) is standard 5 years (though you can do an accelerated 4 year course). After that is the 2 years foundation post some of which you may be able to spend in opthalmology and optic surgery, then you can specialise in surgery which will take several more years.

   It takes about 13 years to become an ophthalmologist to start with, which is the first requirement before taking the extra courses in the operation of the laser equipment.
