Understanding I Have Astigmatism, Can I Wear Contact Lenses -Best Info

I have astigmatism in both my eyes and my optician said I wont be able to ever wear contacts or get surgery, however i have seen on T.V a few times people with my condition having minor laser surgery then being able to wear contacts, i’m only asking because i have been bullied my whole life for wearing glasses an now i’m 18 I don’t feel confident wearing them and i’m worried my eye sight will get worse because of my vanity.

I was told I have an astigmatism and after glasses for about 9 years I just started wearing contacts (I tried once LONG ago but didn’t work so hot). My contacts work just fine and I didnt’ have to have surgery, they said the contacts would work better with surgery but I just don’t have the funds at the moment. I would try to find another dr.

You definitely can. I have astigmatism in my right eye and I wear contacts fine and plan to get surgery once my eyesight stops changing (and I have the money!). It just causes your eyesight to be a bit more blurred, but since you have it in both eyes they should be about the same. It doesn’t effect the surface of your eye so it’s no different to wear contacts.

Yes you can wear contact lenses – you need toric lenses. You cannot have laser eye surgery until your prescription has been stable for 2 years and you are over 21. The younger you are when you have laser eye surgery the more likely it is that you will need to have it redone as your prescription will continue to increase albeit from 0 until into your mid 20′s. You can also try overnight vision correction which is suitable for prescriptions up to -5.00 and 1.50 of astigmatism. The beauty of overnight vision correction is that you wear specially shaped lenses only at night so you are lens free and GLASSES free during the day. But even better is the fact that they stop short-sightedness getting worse because they hold the eye in the correct shape over time – this has been supported by many research studies and is called “myopia control”. Bullying is a terrible thing and can ruin your younger years. Talk to your parents and explain to them how you feel. There are many studies that have shown how much a teens confidence is improved when they get rid of their glasses and how all aslpects of their academic, social and sporting life improves. We have launched an anti-bulling page on Facebook which gives lots of information about exactly this subject. We will also launch a website soon. Good luck! jennifer@igolenses
