Correctable 20/20 vision, meaning anything that gives you 20/20 vision including glasses or laser surgery..

  2. nusimaloo Says:

Why don’t you just get the laser surgery? Then join the navy direct. Life is too short for scheming. The best laid plans of mice and men….

  3. yaheigh Says:

In theory. I know a guy who was planning a similar route (except Seals). They said they’d give him she surgery – but he got fed up with waiting after he hadn’t it gotten in a few months and went another route.

  4. Dan Randall Says:

I don’t think they let homos in the military. Unless they can give you laser non-homo surgery.

  5. gorramnit Says:

You can not have most forms of civilian lasik, so be careful and don’t rush into things. This is because the cuts that the laser makes in your eye can tear under combinations of high wind speeds and high altitude. Your best bet would be to get in wearing glasses and sign up to go to the medical base in Texas and get free high-speed lasik.

First of all the Army (and other services) are looking to cut costs, just like you and me. If your physical shows you to be in need of eye surgery, don’t be too surprised if they skip over you. Also, your vision is only one element of being a pilot. Intelligence, skill and resourcefulness are valued quite highly.

  7. acidBURN Says:

They cannot “make” you have laser eye surgery. It is a benefit that is offered, but you have to stand in line for it like everyone else. Laser eye surgery is not offered at every military installation.

Do you have a Bachelor’s Degree? If no, then forget about being a pilot for the Navy. navy pilots are Officers, and Officers have degrees.

  8. Brian S Says:

To add on to the laser eyes surgery not being a guaranteed thing – keep in mind that the results of corrective eye surgery are not guaranteed either. The goal is improve vision but things can and do happen which leave you with worse vision or no vision.

Let’s check out the flaws in this plan:
    o You want to be a Ranger…
    – You don’t “become” a Ranger. There is an intensive tryout, and if you make it through that, there is an even more intensive training regimen.

o You want to get out of the Army and go Navy
    – The odds are, this ain;t gonna happen since (generally) our sister services frown upon having us lowly Army pukes tainting their ranks

o You want to be an Officer
    – Yeah. Ain’t gonna touch that one.

o You want to be a pilot AFTER you get laser refractive eye surgery
    – That alone requires a waiver. And yes, you have to tell them that “I may have 20/20 vision…but it ain’t always been so. This one time…at boot camp…I joined the most elite fighting force in the world in order to get my eyes worked on…”

    In my humble opinion:
o Join the Army in an MOS that works with aircraft
    o Get the surgery
o Drop a Warrant Packet, and fly Apaches (an airborne death machine), a Chinook (the God Almighty of moving EVERYTHING), a Kiowa (gives ya great street cred when speakin’ to the chicks), or one of many fixed wing assets that can provide you with something much more valuable than the ability to fly Mach 3 while doing barrel rolls and a Spilt-S….the abilty to get up, walk to the head, take a piss, and get a cup of coffee.

    Does this help?
