FAQ: If I Get Laser Eye Surgery Will I
Im pretty young, 16, but my vision is HORRIBLE and i mean horrible ( -4.5) Without my glasses or contacts i can’t see anything. I’m waiting to turn 21 so i can be eligible for laser eye surgery but I heard once you get surgery and years later when your vision gets blurry again you cant wear glasses or contacts! Is this true?

I don’t think laser surgery has been around long enough to say that could happen yet. If you’re going to do it, be sure to research the surgeons and find out who’s the best in the field or you could possibly regret.

DUDE! Im 13 and and i have the same vision as you!! You’re not that bad!! MY teachers husband is negative 6.somethingg! Okay so anyways, yea once you get the laser surgery, and a few years later when it blurrs out, you can get contacts or glasses again, but doctors recommend not to because your eye becomeVeryy sensitive, and the contacts will hurt you, so you can wear glasses.. Myth myth myth..isn’tt it surprising about how many people lie??ha haa:)

current laser surgery has to be repeated after about 6-10years and contacts are not possible , but improvements are being made and by the time you are 21 there will be many more options, including non-invasive treatment

First off, don’t worry, -4.50 is well within the range of what they can do with a laser. (I was a -6.50, and the surgeon sorta scoffed and said “you’re not that bad”).
Secondly, absolutely not true: you can wear glasses after surgery, or contacts (although sometimes the contacts don’t fit as well because of the shape of the cornea afterwards). Glasses won’t necessarily fix all the resultant problems, for instance glare or haloes at night, but there’s absolutely no reason you can’t wear them afterwards.

My eye doctor has always told me that laser surgery is a good option to save money on glasses/contacts over the years but it is not a permanent fix. Like everyone, as we get older our eyes do change, especially around middle age. So at this point you would probably need to get glasses. I don’t see any reason why you WOULDN’T be able to wear glasses or contacts, but you should talk about it with your eye doctor.
