Laser eye surgery is very popular nowadays in the UK and statistics show there are over 10, 000 patients taking this surgery every week. No doubt that there are a large number of people who have benefited from it ever since it was introduced in the early 1990′s. But the fact is, though the surgery is more mature now, it is not as good as advisement advocates or surgeon says. If you want to take this surgery, please read ahead and know more about the fact before the surgery.
Laser eye surgery is advertised like this: a simple procedure, no complications, no pains and less time for recovery, and the most important is it can enable patients to get rid of eyeglasses or contact lenses in their later life. How attractive it is! And due to the fierce competition of this market, more and more people who can not afford the high cost before are able to take this surgery at discounted price.
However, the fact is many clinics are exaggerating the benefits of Laser eye surgery and misleading patients about the high success rate, but covering the risks and complications existing in this surgery. For example, some clinics declare to patients there will be low rate of complication, and even some say there is no complication at all, but the fact is research made by the Medical Journal Ophthalmology show there will be 1/10 failure rate, instead of 1/1000 as advertised. In order to pursue more profits, they will conceal the bad but true fact and do not take their obligation to let their patients know the real risks.
Medical Defense Union (MDU) is to deal with claims against doctors. In the past 6 years, the claims have increased by 166% and claims against Laser eye surgery covers one third of all ophthalmology claims. Among all these claims, the majority is people are not satisfied with the treating result as it is not as good as the expectation eye doctor gave them before the surgery. Some patients claim for surgical errors, so we can see there are risks inside, while others claim for the complications after the surgery, such as pain, sensitivity, corneal scarring or even blindness.
Health Which? have made some investigations on surgeons who perform Laser eye surgery. It is terrible that some doctors will perform the surgery after several days of training and do not have qualification at all. No doubts that there will be so many claims after the surgery.
Of course, this does not mean Laser eye surgery is bad. This is just to reveal some facts existing now. Therefore, before we take this surgery, it is better to learn more about the surgery, complications of the clinic and find the qualified and certified surgeons to perform the surgery for us.
